Sign Language Week:

...NZ Sign Language Week...

In Hub 1 we have been celebrating and learning all about NZ Sign Language Week.
We have been using and practising the alphabet to learn how to say our name using sign language.

It has been a lot of fun and we are becoming so confident with sharing our names to one another.

Here are some photos of learners who have shared to the hub their name in sign language...

Stepping Out!

Here is Mrs England's Guardian Group with the Stepping out programme:

We were VERY lucky to get to ride in a police car today and to dress up in real police gear today.

We have loved our week learning about being safe walking on the footpath and when crossing roads.

It has been lots of fun working with and learning from Constable Gordon throughout the week!

Measurement: Learning about Capacity!

Mrs England's Measurement learners...

Today we focused on learning about capacity and volume.

We now have an understanding that capacity is the amount of space within a object and how much it can hold.
We were able to order a range of containers, all different sizes, to see what ones had the smallest capacity, to the largest containers having a larger capacity. It was a very fun activity.
The children gained a better understanding of how to find out how to find out a containers capacity and to see if it is larger or smaller than others.

The children also used explored what millilitres (ml) and litres (L) are and how we use them to measure the weight of containers and their capacity.
We felt what a litre was, using a 1 litre milk bottle and then used this knowledge to compare other objects weight.
We used a continuum and made decisions about where other objects sat on our 'buckets' (continuum) and placed where we believed each object sat by its weight e.g. if it was more, about or less than a litre.

Measuring Time

Mrs England's Measurement Group

Mrs England's measurement group has been focusing on time this week.

We have been learning about using seconds, minutes and hours to measure time.

Today we timed ourselves completing a range of activities to see how long it took us to complete each one. Some of us drew pictures, writing numbers 1-100, jumping for a certain number of times, while others created a lego creation. Some of these activities were quick to complete while others took longer, about 5- 10 minutes.
We used a digital clock to time ourselves, and some children had a go using the analogue clock, which was a lot harder.

Star Writers

Mrs England Literacy Group in action

W.A.L.H.T... brainstorm our memorable experiences.
W.A.L.H.T... create a plan before writing a story.

These star writers have created some wonderful brainstorms and plans in writing so far this week.

The children cannot wait to start writing their stories using their plans.

I know I cannot wait to read the stories when they are finished!

Motor Magic

Mrs England's Guardian Group had fun working on their coordination skills today.

The children had to cut out an unusual shape, that they drew, using scissors.

It was hard work cutting along the line and using smaller controlled cuts rather than fast long cuts.
