Sign Language Week:

...NZ Sign Language Week...

In Hub 1 we have been celebrating and learning all about NZ Sign Language Week.
We have been using and practising the alphabet to learn how to say our name using sign language.

It has been a lot of fun and we are becoming so confident with sharing our names to one another.

Here are some photos of learners who have shared to the hub their name in sign language...

Mrs England's Break Through Groups

Mrs England's Break through groups

This is the dance group. They have been practicing on the stage in the hall. Mrs McDonald has been working with them the last two Fridays to support this dance group.
The dance is really coming together.
They are now working on keeping closer on the stage when dancing in a group and are now sorting out costumes for their performance.

These boys and girls have been researching how to tie a balloon on YouTube. They found a wonderful clip.
You can view the clip on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzpMuO1BnJ
(the video can be viewed at the bottom of the page)

It has been very helpful to their break through goal- they are so close to achieving it! Go boys!

The magic group have been practicing and researching a range of tricks they can do.
Here is Justin doing his 'Cut the string' Trick. Enjoy :).

Here is the Dance groups run through of their dance at the moment (rehearsal #1).

Break Through!

Mrs England's Break Through Groups
21/02/2014

Balloons:

Today the Balloon Group's goal was to blow up and tie a balloon.
Many children had a go at using the pump, but didn't actually blow up a balloon using their mouth.
Some children watched YouTube clips to work out how to tie up a balloon while others experimented using their hands and balloons.

It is a hard skill and the children are struggling with achieving this goal. Next week we may have to use different balloons that the children can easily blow up themselves without a pump and they will actually be able to tie the balloons.

Mujtaba and Carys ACHIEVED their goal! They blew up a balloon, using a pump, AND tied a balloon!!!!! AWESOME WORK!!
Caleb and Taylor had go tying their balloons- Keep trying! :)

Next step...
We didn't have time to look at balloons online. Our next step is to look at balloons online (for experts to have a go) and use NORMAL balloons to blow up and tie.
                           Hip Hop Dance:

The Hip Hop Dance group have been watching YouTube clips of dance moves today learning some basic moves to add in to their dance. Its been amazing watch them learn from the clips and other members in their group.
The girls are enjoying working together and trying out a range of dance moves.

Next Step...
Hannah taught the group some moves.
YouTube clips to learn basic dance moves.
Our next goal is to dance on the stage to know how to move and work as a group on a stage when performing.

                                  Magic:

The Magic group used Google search to discover a new magic trick. Using a scrunched up piece of paper you put the pencil on the paper, you slowly push down on the pencil and the pencil rises and looks like is it is floating.  They also watched YouTube clips to discover how to do different tricks.

Next Step...
We used Youtube and Google to find tricks. We experimented with 2-3 tricks.
Next goal is to find a trick that involves no hands and having something free falling/ standing.
                                   Art:

Julia worked independently, as Brittany was away today. Julia worked on drawing an image and experimenting using water colours and paint brushes. She is becoming familiar working with a paint brush!

Next step...
Used water colours and experimented with paint brushes. House painting, cake and a present.
Next goal: Use actual paint to create the image- diamond.

Measuring Time

Mrs England's Measurement Group

Mrs England's measurement group has been focusing on time this week.

We have been learning about using seconds, minutes and hours to measure time.

Today we timed ourselves completing a range of activities to see how long it took us to complete each one. Some of us drew pictures, writing numbers 1-100, jumping for a certain number of times, while others created a lego creation. Some of these activities were quick to complete while others took longer, about 5- 10 minutes.
We used a digital clock to time ourselves, and some children had a go using the analogue clock, which was a lot harder.

Star Writers

Mrs England Literacy Group in action

W.A.L.H.T... brainstorm our memorable experiences.
W.A.L.H.T... create a plan before writing a story.

These star writers have created some wonderful brainstorms and plans in writing so far this week.

The children cannot wait to start writing their stories using their plans.

I know I cannot wait to read the stories when they are finished!
