Introducing our athletics day reporters

Today is a great day for Stonefields Athletics.
It is an overcast day with the sun fighting to come out from the clouds.  All the Y0-2 learners are currently out in the field participating in athletics day.

Hub 9 Year 3 learners are also 'out in the field' but for a different reason. Today they are our online bloggers.

They have splintered into groups of 4 and are out capturing all the highlights from the day.

Stay tuned for more fast breaking athletics stories...

Mrs England’s Breakthrough groups- Jewellery Group

Mrs England’s Breakthrough groups- Jewellery Group

These wonderful learners have been learning about Jewellery. They have found out when Jewellery was first made in history and how it has changed over time.
They have also explored different types of Jewellery made today and found out about all the different types of Jewellery.

This Friday the group focused on making shapes and Jewellery out of play dough. They decided to look into making jewellery out of clay. They wanted to start experimenting with play dough first because you can’t change clay, but play dough can be changed and reformed to make different shapes.

Here are some examples of the group’s designs and Jewellery with Play Dough...

...Jewellery Breakthrough...

Here are the AMAZING Jewellery Breakthrough group.

They have been working great together today. They have come up with a plan of what Jewellery they want to make and what one they will make first, second and lastly.

It has been great to see how on task and focused they are as learners!

Measurement: Learning about Capacity!

Mrs England's Measurement learners...

Today we focused on learning about capacity and volume.

We now have an understanding that capacity is the amount of space within a object and how much it can hold.
We were able to order a range of containers, all different sizes, to see what ones had the smallest capacity, to the largest containers having a larger capacity. It was a very fun activity.
The children gained a better understanding of how to find out how to find out a containers capacity and to see if it is larger or smaller than others.

The children also used explored what millilitres (ml) and litres (L) are and how we use them to measure the weight of containers and their capacity.
We felt what a litre was, using a 1 litre milk bottle and then used this knowledge to compare other objects weight.
We used a continuum and made decisions about where other objects sat on our 'buckets' (continuum) and placed where we believed each object sat by its weight e.g. if it was more, about or less than a litre.

Measuring Time

Mrs England's Measurement Group

Mrs England's measurement group has been focusing on time this week.

We have been learning about using seconds, minutes and hours to measure time.

Today we timed ourselves completing a range of activities to see how long it took us to complete each one. Some of us drew pictures, writing numbers 1-100, jumping for a certain number of times, while others created a lego creation. Some of these activities were quick to complete while others took longer, about 5- 10 minutes.
We used a digital clock to time ourselves, and some children had a go using the analogue clock, which was a lot harder.

Strand Math Measurement:

We are comparing what is smaller and bigger than our Gingerbread man.
